RARE 16THC. ITALIAN LINEN CUTWORK INSERTION. 

Second half of the 16THC. a rare Italian linen insertion with cross, X and zigzag motifs . For reference on Italian cutwork please see  the book written by Santina Levey who was the curator at the Victoria and Albert museum. Santina Levey/Lace:A History (1983". Please see Figure 53b for similar insertion made in Italy during the 16TH century.Lace like this was not only worn but also used for expensive household linens. The lace has a wonderful geometric pattern and the fine buttonhole stitch is superbly made.The lace has a Van Dyke edged needle lace partly attached and measures approx.42" by 4" wide ,this does not include the edging lace. In very good strong condition. A superb lace for the early collector.
