MAJESTIC WORLD WAR l BELGIAN NEEDLELACE TABLECLOTH W/COATS OF ARMS. A truly wonderful cloth! Cloths like this were made by the Belgian lacemakers during World War l and given by Belgium to important people who helped Belgium during the war. One of these, Henry Hoover the wealthy industrialist who eventually became President of the United States became the Chairman for the Commission for Relief in Belgium and was very instrumental in raising funds  because of the blockade, Belgium were in sore need of food and other items.The Commission even made efforts to import lace thread so that the thousands of lacemakers could make laces, working day and night  to create the lace items and many of these laces were bought by American collectors to help the people of Belgium during the war. There were famous artists commissioned who helped to design many of these war laces. The Smithsonian and other museums around the world have some of the important war laces in their collection. The Coats of Arms were for the Allies who helped in the War, the United States, United Kingdom, France , Italy, Russia, Japan and other allies. Measuring approx. 65". In very good condition.
