CIRCA 1860's, MAGNIFICENT BRUSSELS POINT DE GAZE LACE SHAWL. A stunning Brussels Point De Gaze lace shawl with not only a luxurious and ornate design but also has the most superb workmanship. The needlelace fills almost the entire shawl and has a droschel net ground.The design is so profuse with roses and flowers  scrollwork, needle lace fillings and Point D'Esprit. There are well over fifty roses with raised three dimensional petals and also more than seventy-seven roses and flowers with raised cordonet. There are lovely shaped large vignettes on each end filled with the finest needle point fillings with meandering vines and elegant leaves throughout the entire shawl. The shawl has elaborate scrollwork near all the edges that are also filled with assorted tiny needle lace designs. Measuring approx. 86" long by 16" wide, 219cm by 40-41cm. This shawl seems unused or rarely used and has been in storage so the item has it's original patina as it has never been laundered. Items like these were usually acquired on the Grand Tours that were made by the wealthy and aristocratic families around the world who travelled through Europe acquiring Couture gowns, lace etc.There were also a select group of lace shops in the U.S that imported the very best lace from France and Belgium There are a few scattered tiny openings that are minor and some age storage stains, also minor. This shawl in in very good strong condition. A wonderful piece for the Brussels lace collector.
