EXQUISITE 19THC. CANTON SILK EMBROIDERED SHAWL W/ CARVED PAINTED FACES, FIGURES,GARDENS

EXQUISITE 19THC. CANTON SILK EMBROIDERED SHAWL W/CARVED ,PAINTED FACES,
FIGURES, GARDENS. Circa 1890-1900, a superb hand embroidered Canton polychrome silk piano shawl with carved faces that are also hand painted. Extremely RARE, this type of shawl is  only very rarely found.. The entire shawl has been hand embroidered with large and smaller figures dressed in traditional dress in the midst of large gardens, pagodas and architectural buildings. There are more than 60  figures with carved painted faces, all with different color ways and details. We are unfortunately unable to show all the scenes. The clothing is elaborate with decorative detailed work on the robes and there are large roses in the design and a lush array of florals in the landscaped gardens. The shawl measures approx. 62-64 with additional 24-25 macrame fringe. The shawl is mainly in very good strong condition, but around the narrow plainer edge , there is one repair, one edge has water stain and there are a few  scattered marks and openings. The main part of the shawl is fine. The shawl can either be cleaned or if desired one could move the Macrame edge closer to the main embroidered shawl which as the pictures show is practically the entire shawl. There is fine detailed work on the figurals with intricate headpieces and hair designs and also on the expressions of the face. A wonderful work of art for the serious collector. In almost 45 years I have seen thousands of Canton embroidered shawls that were made for the European market ,all beautiful but I have seen only 10 or so of these shawls. This level of shawl was made for the wealthiest of clients or for very important people or occasions.
