A beautiful Cantu lace banquet tablecloth measuring approx. 145-148" by 72". The cloth is quite remarkable as it has over one hundred figures, assorted animals and birds. The ornate Cantu lace scrollwork has numerous shaped vignettes with overflowing fountains , large scale birds with lovely three dimensional work. The  central panel has meandering vines with four classical mythical winged mermaids or sirens. Most of the mermaids and birds have very fine raised three dimensional raised feathers and and cordonet work. The symbol of the mermaid was  a common element in Italian antiques and are to be found in antique bronzes, furnitture and in many of the Cathedrals throughout Italy. They say the first mermaid image was found in Assyria in 1000 BC and was a symbol of transformation. They are also a symbol of beauty and love and of course throughout the ages they have been given different meanings in a multitude of traditions. The design and workmanship are quite superb. In very good condition. This is a wonderful tablecloth for the serious lace and linen collector.
