MAJESTIC 240" BURANO LACE,MILANESE LACE BANQUET TABLECLOTH W/CHERUB,BIRDS

MAJESTIC 240"BURANO LACE,MILANESE LACE BANQUET TABLECLOTH W/CHERUBS,BIRDS. A superior Italian lace banquet tablecloth that might have come from the J.P.Morgan estate.Circa 1900, one rarely comes across this level of artistry in linens ,not only superb workmanship but the cloth has a wonderful design and also a amazing length. There are playful cherubs ,ribbons, flowers and foliate all around the central part of the cloth. There are apprx. 110 or more cherubim celebrating the rites of Spring with garlands composed of fruit and florals. Surrounding this design there are apprx. 68 or more winged mythological birds, some with raised three dimensional work within the meandering Milanese lace scrollwork. The edge design has apprx. 60 birds or love birds and undulating branches of foliate and florals in the design. In all, a amazing amount of work. One would have had to be exceptionally wealthy or part of the nobility to have such a cloth commissioned. We have some other laces that belonged to J.P.Morgan and so it is possible this came from that estate. There are some age related stains on the cloth, some lighter areas where they were cleaned, basically the cloth needs to be laundered as it has been sitting in storage for a long time. It does not seem used, it has one tiny opening near the edge that I see.The texture and feel of the cloth is very strong and is either unused or rarely used. A superb item for the serious lace or linen collector. (Item #ALT131)
