CIRCA 1700's, SUPERB AND RARE BRUSSELS LACE CAP BACK WUTH LAPPETS. CIRCA 1725, a rare elaborate Brussels lace cap back and lappets with a rich and full design of large ornate flowers and meandering vines and leaves. The linen thread is of course the finest possible. The thread used in those days was so fine that it had to be spun in a dim light and also to be spun in a damp atmosphere. The light used was made to shine only on the thread itself so that it would retain it's elasticity.Although one strives to take good pictures, with this fine of a thread it is almost impossible. There is nothing quite like holding a piece like this in one's hand, only then can one truly understand how ethereal the lace is.There are a few openings in this offering but basically I consider minor, compared to the overall good strong condition.
